Trochilus

Trochilus was a member of the Argive royal house. He was the son of Callithyia (also known as Callithoe or Callithea) and grandson of King Peiras or Peiranthus. The king founded the first temple of Hera in Argolis and appointed his daughter, Callithyia, as the priestess. Peiras also dedicated the most ancient statue of Hera, made of the wild pear tree from Tiryns. The family had a knack for inventing things. For example, Callithyia or Trochilus invented the chariot and dedicated it to Hera. Pausanias preserved a tradition that Trochilus was a priest of Demeter’s Mysteries. The hostility of Agenor forced him to flee Argos. He came to Attica and married a woman of Eleusis who bore him two sons, Eubouleus and Triptolemus.
