Cyamites

Cyamites was a local Athenian hero. His name comes from κύαμος, the ancient Greek word for broad beans (Vicia faba), so Cyamites may have been the god of beans and patron of the bean market that operated near his sanctuary in Athens. Pausanias saw his small sanctuary on the road to Eleusis, just past the river Cephissus, but he could not say whether he's got his name because he was the first to sow beans or because they could not attribute to Demeter the discovery of beans and therefore decided to create a dedicated hero. Only the mystai at the Eleusinian Mysteries and those who were familiar with the teachings of Orphism knew the answer, but Pausanias was unwilling to reveal it. The Hungarian scholar in classical philology Carl Kerényi (1897-1973) believes that Cyamites was another word for Hades.
