The Ephorate of Antiquities of West Attica is based in Athens and is responsible for the municipalities of Megara, Mandra-Eidyllia, Eleusis, Aspropyrgos, Chaidari, Agioi Anargyroi-Kamatero, Egaleo, Ilion, Peristeri, Petroupolis, Agia Varvara, Fyli, and Acharnes. It is a Dependent Regional Service of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and is under the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage.

The Ephorate exercises archaeological control in its area of responsibility based on the current archaeological legislation and especially the provisions of Law 3028/2002, as well as based on administrative acts with other departments. It is also responsible for the operation of the archaeological museums that exist in its area of responsibility, as well as the protection and operation of any declared archaeological site. It also deals with the processing of citizens’ requests pertaining to the construction activity or other projects carried out in its region. 

The West Attica, Piraeus & Islands Ephorate of Antiquities is responsible for:

a) planning and executing maintenance, restoration, reconstruction and promotion of monuments and archaeological sites, undertaking archaeological research, managing museum artefacts and conducting the scientific and managerial work required by the aforementioned activities

b) scientific research and the discovery, maintenance, conservation, protection, promotion and safeguarding of antiquities, their display at museums and the participation in national and international exhibitions

c) the care for the scientific study and publication of antiquities, the management of monuments, archaeological sites, museums and public collections within its area of responsibility, the participation in international and European programs, the organization and participation in workshops, conferences, seminars and educational activities on issues related to the responsibilities of the Ephorate, as well as the production of conventional and digital publications and educational material

d) the archaeological control during all kinds of works (excavations, landscaping, etc.), the conduct of excavations wherever ancient artefacts are discovered, the processing of relevant cases in cooperation with the central services of the Ministry of Culture, and finally the referral on a case by case basis to the Central Archaeological Council and the competent Local Council of Monuments of Attica

e) the issuance of permits for the study of archaeological material, photography, cinematography, artistic events, free entry of individuals to museums and archaeological sites

f) the publication of the scientific work of the Ephorate with lectures of its employees and their participation in conferences, as well as with the dissemination of articles in archaeological publications
